ABOUT AUTISM

In 2023, the CDC announced that Autism now affects 1 in every 36 children in the US. That's up from 1-in-44 children just 2 years prior.

Autism affects the way a child communicates and socializes with others. A young child with autism may babble or know certain words, but not understand how to use gestures (such as pointing, waving bye bye) or language as a means of interacting with others. Additionally, children with autism often have repetitive and restricted behaviors and interests, as well as sensitivities to touch, taste, sounds, smells and visual stimuli. Together, these characteristics  can make everyday activities more stressful.

Research shows that autism affects the way the brain develops early in life and the way a baby begins to collect and process information. The earlier a child begins treatment, the better the chances of influencing how they learn. That’s why it’s so important for families to understand the signs that put a young child “at-risk” for autism and to seek resources that will support that child's learning style.

What we do know is that autistic individuals grow up and need opportunities to follow their areas of strengths, hopes and dreams. Together, we can to help build a more inclusive, equitable society for all.
Early Warning Signs for Autism Include:

-Seems uninterested or fails to engage during playful interactive games (e.g., peek-a-boo)
-Fails to point at things or notice things in his/her environment (e.g., a bird in the sky)
-Seldom responds when his/her name is called
-Makes poor eye contact
-Babbles or talks with an unusual tone of voice
-Shows distress in new situations
-Exhibits strong sensitivities to touch, sights, or sounds
-Displays unusual hand or body movements
-Does not smile when smiled at.
-Loses words or social skills at any age

A Child may also:

-Spend a lot of time lining things up or putting things in a certain order
-Gets "stuck" on doing the same things over and over - i.e., spins objects
-Walks on his/ her toes

If your child is exhibiting any of these signs, please contact your pediatrician or refer to the resources below for an immediate evaluation.
